What Is Christian?
Part 1 of 3 in the series “One Way”

September 6, 2009             Pastor Scott Oldenburgh

Read back over the verses from the Essentials of the Christian Faith from this week’s notes

ê  Based on what you read, what is your understanding of what it takes to be a follower of Jesus Christ?

ê  Which of the 3 areas is the most difficult to grasp – repentance, asking or faith? Why?

ê  Are there any of these 3 that can be skipped or lessened?

ê  How have each of those 3 been a part of your story?

Think back to the taste test illustration

ê  Based on that illustration, what do you think the difference is between a denomination, a religion, and a cult?

ê  Can you think off the top of your head of groups that fit each of these categories?

ê  What are some dangers to denominations? Other religions? Cults?

There is a push in our culture to assume that “It doesn’t matter what you believe, as long as you fully believe it” and “All religions are the same”

ê  Do you believe those statements? Why or why not?

ê  Can you think of an example of other areas in life where this type of thinking is logical? Illogical?

Read John 3:16-17

ê  According to this passage, what is God’s purpose in Christ?

ê  How do you think God accomplishes this purpose?

ê  What is needed from the church for this purpose to be fulfilled?

Based on the percentages from this week’s message, do you think that Fellowship of the Metroplex is in competition with other churches?

ê  What should our focus be?

ê  What are the uncompromising essentials?

ê  What are areas that are non-essential and can be adapted to impact those percentages?
