Part 1 of 6 in the series “How To Get A Divorce”

March 30, 2008                                                  Pastor Scott Oldenburgh

IF DIVORCE STATISTICS ARE TRUE, WE HAVE ONE OF TWO CHOICES:

Ê (Join) them

Ê (Learn) from them

QUESTION:

Would you be happy married to a selfish, irritable, insensitive, critical, hard-hearted, generally unhappy person?

WHEN GOD IS NOT AT THE CENTER OF MY LIFE, I AM . . . .

ü  more (selfish)

ü  more (irritable)

ü  more (insensitive)

ü  more (critical)

ü  more (hard-hearted)

ü  most (unhappy)

THE MARRIAGE FORMULA

Two people become (one flesh)

“ . . . and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh?  So they are no longer two, but one.  Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.’ ”

Matthew 19:5-6

WHAT HAPPENS?

Complete p(hysical), m(ental), s(piritual), and e(motional) bonding to one another

WHOSE PLAN IS THIS?

What (God) has joined together vs. (man’s) desire to separate

HOW DOES ‘ONE FLESH’ ACTUALLY HAPPEN?

Sacrificial (submission) to God and sacrificial (giving) to one another

“Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her . . .”

Ephesians 5:24-25

BEING THE BEST MARRIAGE MATERIAL I CAN BE

I  Growing spiritually . . .

I won’t settle for (shallow) living

I  Thinking and planning . . .

I have (dreams) and goals

I  Sensitive to others needs . . .

I am emotionally (stable)

I  Physically engaged . . .

I am in this for the (long haul)

THE FINAL QUESTION:

WHERE ARE ALL OF THESE ATTRIBUTES FOUND?

MARRIAGE PRINCIPLE

When 2 people are growing closer to God, they cannot simultaneously grow farther apart from one another
