February 17, 2008                                              Pastor Scott Oldenburgh

The Addiction WHO

Addiction affects both the (weak) and the (strong)

I  Weak people (giving in) or looking for a place to (hide)

I  Strong people who can’t (stop) until they’ve won or (conquered)

The Addiction WHAT

Addiction . . .

. . . means habits or behaviors that (take over) a person

. . . is characterized by not being able to (stop easily)

. . . is often (chemical) or (psychological) related

. . . is (destructive) in nature

The Addiction WHY

WHY is addiction wrong?

Certain addictions are wrong because of what they (involve)

“Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

2 Timothy 2:22

“Submit yourselves, then, to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

James 4:7

Certain addictions are wrong because they take over your (priorities)

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:21

Certain addictions are wrong because they take over your (physical) body

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your body.”

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Addiction at its core is wrong because it challenges the (Lordship) of your life

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?”

Luke 6:46

THE ADDICTION PRINCIPLE

ü  Anything that challenges you for Lordship of your life and (wins) is prone to be an addiction

THE ADDICTION TRUTH

ü  Addiction is (pseudo-power)

“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator – who is forever praised.  Amen.”

Romans 1:25

THE ADDICTION REALITY

ü  Addiction has (consequences)

“Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts.”

Romans 1:26a

“Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”

Romans 1:32
