I Just Don’t Care

Part 2 of 6 in the series “Out Of Control”

February 10, 2008                                              Pastor Scott Oldenburgh

THE REALITY OF DEPRESSION

~ Depression affects approximately 19 million Americans or 9.5% of the population in any given one-year period

~ At some point in their lives, 10% - 25% of women and 5% - 12% of men will likely become clinically depressed

~ It is estimated that depression exacts an economic cost of over $30 billion each year, but the cost of human suffering cannot be measured

TRUTH OF THE STATISTICS

There are a large number of people missing out on the (fullness) of the life that God intended for them

“I have come that they may have life – and have it to the full.”

John 10:10

Special Note: There is a difference between (suffering) from depression and (living) depressed

I  Depression is (clinical)

I  Living depressed is (circumstantial)

EITHER WAY . . .

SOMETHING HAS TO (CHANGE)!

THE HARDEST QUESTION FOR THE DEPRESSED PERSON:

Can I find enough (strength) to do anything about it?

GAINING A NEW PERSPECTIVE

I Peter 4:7-11

It defeats the thought that you are (damaged) goods

“Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.”

v. 7b

It defeats the thought that you are (better off) alone

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.  Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”

v. 8-9

r  Start (serving)

It defeats the thought that you are (unproductive) and it takes the focus off you

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”

v. 10

r  Live (upward)

It defeats the thought that everything is all about (you)

“If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God.  If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.  To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.  Amen.”

v. 11
